The Thorson experience is grounded in the belief that technology, science, and engineering are inextricably intertwined with the humanities, and that a liberal arts approach brings depth and breadth to technical education.
The IDEAS course (Innovation and Discovery in Engineering, Arts, and Sciences) is the heart of the Thorson program, while community events like local excursions, game nights and friendly competitions bring you together outside the classroom. Thorsonites have the option to live in our exclusive Honors Explore Theme Learning Community to be part of an even more tight-knit community within the academic cohort.
Are you interested in First-Year Honors but also hoping to study abroad in your first year? We believe a world of IDEAS is also a world worth exploring, and are collaborating with the First-Year Semester Abroad program to allow a cohort of Thorson students to pursue their fall semester in France. Thorsonites in France will engage in a fully supported online version of fall semester IDEAS before they integrate with the full Thorson cohort in spring semester.
In addition, each year Thorson students are invited to apply for immersive educational experiences exclusive to our students, such as a Winterim or Spring Break trip overseas, or an Honors Enrichment opportunity of their own design. Visit thorson.mines.edu/honors-enrichment-awards to learn more about these opportunities!
All accepted students at Mines are invited to apply for the Thorson First-Year Honors Experience. Our application is designed to offer a taste of the types of topics and activities you’ll engage in as a Thorsonite. We’re looking for students who are eager to explore the intersections of humanities and STEM and push the boundaries of their educational experiences.

The problems the world faces today require leaders who draw from engineering, science, design, and the arts to create true impact, change, and benefit for society. In Grandey Leadership by Design, we build the multi-disciplinary skills to help you grow as a leader, communicator, thinker, innovator, creator, and collaborator.
When you join the Leadership by Design community, you will be a part of experiences both in and out of the classroom:
Participate in Interdisciplinary Projects, Seminars, Discussions & Guest Speakers
Learn About People and How to Design Documents, Systems and Objects for Them
Communicate through Drawing, Modeling, Speaking, Listening and Writing
Think Creatively, Systematically, and Entrepreneurially
Grow as a Person and a Leader of Yourself, Others, and Teams
Participate in Community Workshops, Socials & Events
Live With other Grandey Students in a dedicated Theme Learning Community (optional)
Apply for unique opportunities for immersive education, trips during breaks, and other Honors Enrichment activities
Leadership by Design is open for all incoming freshmen to apply to. In this competitive application process, we try to identify the incoming students that are best-suited for this signature learning experience – those that possess intellectual curiosity, a desire to learn more about leadership, a drive to bring creativity into their work, and a desire to learn in new and exciting ways. On top of that, we try to identify those students that are comfortable with the ambiguity inherent in the grand challenges of this fast-changing, multicultural, and globalized earth and are willing to stretch the way they think about the world.
